Why is stone paper waterproof?

Stone paper, also known as mineral paper or rock paper, is waterproof primarily because of its composition. It’s made from calcium carbonate, a mineral that is naturally water-resistant. Calcium carbonate is commonly found in rocks like limestone and marble.

In the production process of stone paper, calcium carbonate is ground into a fine powder and mixed with a small amount of non-toxic resin as a binding agent. This mixture is then processed into thin sheets through a special manufacturing process that doesn’t involve water, unlike traditional paper production which uses water-based pulp.

Since calcium carbonate is inherently resistant to water, and the manufacturing process doesn’t introduce water into the mixture, the resulting stone paper is naturally waterproof. This property makes stone paper suitable for various applications where water resistance is important, such as outdoor signs, maps, labels, and packaging. Additionally, stone paper is also durable and tear-resistant due to its mineral composition.
