How Is Stone Paper Made?

The production of stone paper is a revolutionary process that differs significantly from traditional papermaking. It begins with crushed limestone, or calcium carbonate, a mineral found in abundance around the world.

This stone is ground into a fine white powder, which becomes the primary ingredient. Then, a small percentage (around 20%) of non-toxic high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is added as a binder. No water, bleach, or acids are used in the process—making it much more environmentally friendly.

The mixture is heated and stretched into ultra-thin sheets using special extrusion equipment. These sheets are then cooled, rolled, and cut to the desired size. The result is a paper-like material that is smooth, waterproof, and incredibly strong.

Because no wood pulp or water is involved, stone paper saves energy and natural resources. Plus, the manufacturing process emits significantly less CO₂ compared to traditional paper production. This makes stone paper a sustainable innovation in the materials industry.
